Terminator Salvation

Went to watch it with my cousin first thing in the morning today. Surprising thing was the place wasn’t packed even thought today was the release day. Maybe it was just too early in a weekday lol.

Ok, back to the movie; what I can say about the 2 hour I was in there is that it’s… bland. Of course, the boom boom bang bangs are aplenty and those are always nice but everything else for a movie titled ‘Terminator’, it could have been better. Not that I’m saying it’s bad but it just turn out to be like those films you’d watch once and forget about really soon after… there was no plot twist (or if there IS a plot, it was so weak that I didn’t notice that it was a plot twist). Not to mention that it was pretty predictable too throughout the film but I suppose that point directly links to the lack of plot twist because the viewers may have seen it coming miles away. But on the better size, there are a whole bunch of new Terminator models introduced in this one movie alone.

All in all, it felt like a 2 hour long Transformers standalone filler episode with all robots chromed.

Alas, those are just my opinion and yours may be better. And I don’t find it to be particularly terrible despite all that I have said, it’s still a fairly entertaining show, too bad that’s all it is. Watch it for some endoskeletal robotics.

Inkheart

January 28, 2009

ok, another entry that wasn’t made on the date it appeared on… well, I’m saying this because this entry is actually made after the one from tomorrow (29 January). You’ll know what I’m talking about when you read that one, assuming you haven’t already. The reason why I had this as another separate entry this time however is because I wanted to keep consistent with naming entries with reviews of movies I’ve watched on that said day with the title of that movie itself like I have always been doing but this time, the movie was watched on a day that I did not have an entry and I don’t feel like overlapping a review entry with my random entry from when I got back home, resulting in this travel-back-to-the-past entry~

Alright, so, you should know what movie I would be talking about by now… yes, Inkheart. It starts off by introducing to the audiences to the existence of a certain rare talent amongst people where they are able do story telling by reading from text so well that what they read actually gets drawn into reality. Just imagine a person reading a poetic paragraph about an epic storm and then suddenly the weather outside changes to represent exactly what he describes, something like that. However, these powers had a drawback where for what’s read out into reality from the written text, something within close proximity in reality will be drawn into the world of the literary source in exchange. Those people with these powers are collectively addressed as Silvertongues in this movie.

The story here is about this Silvertongue guy, while reading a bedtime story to his young daughter, accidentally read several villains and the protagonist (?) out of the story while his wife got sucked into the story in exchange. So now he is travelling all over in search of the same book to read his wife out of it again while the protagonist (?) is pestering the Silvertongue to read him back to his world.

My thought from the start was that the Silvertongue premise alone had a great potential for a shounen series lol. I can imagine several people with similar power fighting with each other by reading out phrases from story books depicting great destructions… and btw, there is this one certain scene that screams Deathnote lol (not telling which part as it would be a spoiler).

But anyway, this is a family flick (kind of), I didn’t notice any blood and the action was generally quite mild in nature. It’s the kind of movie that gives that warm feeling inside every now and then. There was some really cheesy and ridiculous moments too but overall it was a good movie.

Outlander

January 8, 2009

Went to the theaters (again) today lol, and we watched Outlander!

Vikings be GAR!

It’s another one of those random action flick set in a prehistoric setting, involves lots of swords and ancient melee weaponry, lots of computer generated stylization effects, and like every other one of them in the same category, has a certain particular twist with its setting.

Here, it is about Norse Vikings teaming up with an alien from outer space to fight against another alien species from outer space called Moorwen.

When I first read the short description of the movie last night, I was imagining something in the lines of the alien ally providing the Vikings with advanced energy weaponry to fight against their enemies but no… it’s that alien who took up a sword.

The action was decent, with generous servings of gore whenever people gets smashed by hard things. There is also one cool scene with one of the Viking having his guts eaten alive by the Moorwen. The story in general however wasn’t something to mail home about; it was just ok. There was also some parts that didn’t really make sense like when the alien was activating his location beacon in an attempt to call for an extraction home at the end of the movie; half way after a ship appeared in the sky he decided that he wanted to stay on the planet instead and proceeded to destroy the beacon, and then the ship immediately flew away from sight… I mean… WTF was that!? Don’t they have something called ‘logging’? I know we modern Earthlings have it and we can’t even travel freely through space yet. If you were the crew of a ship won’t the first thing you’d do after losing a distress call be trying to investigate the coordinates where the call was last detected from? Seriously now, that part was lol.

But then again, I liked the Moorwen’s design, makes me think of a Gnosis from Xenosaga wearing one of those armours from Crysis.

Oh btw, I also spent the entire earlier half of the day trying to finish that last GTA4 mission I left from yesterday. I’m done with GTA4~

The Spirit

December 30, 2008
the_spirit

They really emphasize the red tie through out the movie...

Made an appointment with my friends to meet up at 4PM at Sunway Pyramid for a show at 4:45PM today. Yesterday, I thought I might have plenty of time for myself to do whatever I like before that but I woke up at 1PM today, leaving me with only 3 hours. Well, didn’t do much with the 3 hours anyway.

Ok, so, we watched The Spirit today, finally. Like the last two Frank Miller movies, this one’s pretty artsy and heavily computer edited as expected. Not that I’m complaining though, I like artsy stuff.

Rephrasing what my friend said, it was cheesy in many parts, and they were obviously intentional, which makes it quite funny. Yes, this show was quite a comedy. It was also comical with some slap-stick jokes peppered here and there, and with the Spirit breaking the  fourth wall every now and then by doing some narrations or giving some explanations to the audiences.

The story was pretty ok but nothing spectacular. It was simply laid out together but the pieces do need some thinking to pick up. Many of the important plot points were told in an ambiguous way. The show was deep. If you went in thinking it’s a mindless action flick or a children flick then chances are you weren’t prepared for this kind of detail and you most probably won’t enjoy it, that’s exactly what me and my friends witnessed today; The movie was clearly rated for above 18 but we still see parents bringing their kids in. Then half way into the show, quite a number of people started leaving their seats. Guess they didn’t understand the movie lol

All in all, it was a good laugh, it had its own charm but frankly, it falls short to 300. Watch it anyway, it’s funny. DENTAL NAZI!!!

The Day The World Stood Baffled

December 18, 2008

Went to the cinemas with my friends today and watched… yeah, that.

The Sphere reminds me of Ozma from FF9

The sphere reminds me of Ozma from FF9

We had earlier planned to watch this before but since one of my friends saw the reviews giving this a 33 out of 100 saying it “overuses special effects”, we tried to go for something else. For a moment, we were planning to watch The Spirit but we found out it wasn’t on schedule (even though it was listed on the previous day in their website) when we got to the theaters. So, we were in line and what we wanted to watch wasn’t there so~ pressed for a decision, we just went for this anyway.

It’s a pretty entertaining show for the part where humans desperately tries to destroy the sphere and Gort. The story however, while it may have been original back during 1951 but… well, it doesn’t have that edge to it by now… maybe it’s just me… maybe it’s all those anime lol. Still, as always, the destruction of humanity is something I’d like to see.

[SPOILER]

Still, the ending seem pretty rushed in a sense. Klaatu, the alien who came to eradicate all humanity to save planet Earth, agreed to spare the humans just because ONE human agreed to behave… JUST ONE FREAKING HUMAN. Then the credits came exactly after he leaves, nothing else after that… WTF? What are the humans going to do after that? The rest of humanity didn’t even know WHY they were attacked, now that Klaatu have left as if they would ever know. Not like the whole collective humanity would listen to ONE random person in these modern days so that ONE behaving human definitely won’t be able to convince its brethrens to follow suit. They will just go on with their arrogant lives and continue destroying planet Earth till Klaatu there regret changing his mind. The End. lol

[SPOILER ENDS] phew

Oh, and that kid’s annoying.

Multi closure

August 12, 2008

Quite a number of things ended today.

One of it would be my daily dominance of my home; my mother and sister came back from Ipoh. Wait, I never mentioned about them leaving before did I? Meh whatever, they went back to Ipoh on Saturday last week and I have been the master of the house during the period of their absence, which means I was free to do anything I like, which was nothing, and that’s exactly what I did~ /o/ My father was around too actually but he left for work early and gets back around the evening, so I was the one who had to do most of the chores. Anyway, they got back today and my sense of freedom ended (though I did nothing with that freedom anyway).

I also finished Phantasy Star Portable today technically. I actually finished it at 5am before bed last night but since that’s already in the morning so it’s still technically considered today. Like all the other times I had with other games, the final boss battle caught me by surprise as I didn’t expect the stage I was playing to be the final stage. Thinking that there was still a long way to go, I even just switched my class over to Master Force (its Phantasy Star’s equivalent of second stage mage) briefly before going for the mission so imagine a player character with low str and def facing a final boss, and all the other AI allies never venture far from your side so you HAVE to run right into the final boss and soak up loads of unfiltered damage for them to do anything besides than standing there doing nothing (they do prove to be quite effective meatshields though. But the final boss love beams, which pierces through stuff, so that idea is quite useless in this case) =__= I didn’t really Game Over or anything since my items were pretty well stocked up but still, being ill-equipped and unprepared ensured that it was a loooooooooooooooong and treacherous battle >__> Good thing my character was 20 levels higher than the boss :p And I can’t take screenshots from my PSP anymore from now on thanks to some technical mistake I made D: So… no pictures~

Self-betrayal

August 11, 2008

I hope I’ll do something relevant to my project tomorrow morning before leaving for college…

Guess what, I didn’t do anything! damn…

Had two alarm clocks set to 7:55am and 8:00am respectively and my A/C set to automatically switch off at 4:30am, to make sure I would wake up in total discomfort and not get back to sleep. With that I did woke up in time, but I unconsciously switched back the A/C on and went back to bed… woke up at 11:30am.

Now I feel a little lightheaded as well, I think I will fall ill again soon. It haven’t even been a month since my last graze with diseases >__>

Ah well…

And here is an awesome movie to look forward to:

Next Saturday is the day!
