PS3 x 2233SW, the doomed marriage

June 1, 2009

I was googling 2233SW and PS3 to check for any updates on the matter I have discussed last time regarding the overscan problem for 720p games when I ran into this thread in the Lowyat forums with someone else finally noticing the same problem I have noted last time about Crystal Defenders on my 2233SW, only that they believe it is the game’s fault (which I believe isn’t true because… err… same game, same set up, same monitor, same problem… well, you do the math). Then the decisive point surfaced: people with DIFFERENT Samsung’s LCD monitor models were also experiencing the same problem! So basically this answers the question I posted last time about whether it was just my 2233SW or all the 2233SWs in the world having the same problem; they do. Not only that, ALL OTHER Samsung monitors might possibly also have the same problem.

This is a sad day for me as I now know I have spent RM600 on trouble.

While the “ALL OTHER Samsung monitors might possibly also have the problem” statement may still be open for questioning, it is still a fact that I had a problem with my 2233SW, and now others too have experienced it. So… for all those in the future who is planning to match their PS3 with an LCD monitor instead of an HDTV, don’t get a Samsung 2233SW.

I guess I really have to contact Samsung soon and see if they have any idea for a magic fix. I suppose expecting Samsung’s R&D to build me a modified 2233SW (2233SW+ maybe? lol) just to handle the 720p PS3 can’t sound any more impossible though.

Man this sucks…

Monitor problem

March 22, 2009

This is actually from yesterday but I was too sleepy to make a post then so here it is today;

So I found out that my Samsung 2233sw has overscans on its sides when my PS3 run games at 720p. Interestingly, 1080p is fine. I’m not sure if this is a problem with all 2233sw in the world or is it only mine, I can’t seem to find any mention of it online too so I can’t really do any speculations. I failed to notice this problem before because the monitor was set to stretch all images to fill up the screen by default so the cropped video images got stretched and it looked like nothing was wrong… until I tried Crystal Defenders earlier this week was when I started suspecting something was not right.

I’ve looked through the manuals for both the monitor and PS3 for some troubleshooters as well as inquired both Samsung and Sony’s website for some information but still nothing so far. It’s as if I was the first to experience this on a 2233sw (I seriously doubt it though, what with several trillions of humans on Earth and all, but the total lack of report for this problem is unsettling). I’ve also tried asking around several places for assistance but still nothing really helpful yet so far.

I have also tried jamming 1280 x 720 progressive signals through the DVI into the monitor from my computer to see if the monitor natively supports that resolution at all; it looked fine so I suppose it does.

Anyway, the cause is still unknown. I just hope I didn’t waste RM600… >__>

So it worked

March 9, 2009

It’s Prophet Muhammad’s Birthday today so it’s a public holiday~ Went down to KL with my father early in the morning and got back with a DVI to HDMI cable for RM50. It looks like it’s a golden wire cable, but it probably is just gold plated instead. Also, it works!

This is how my computer layout currently is.

It is not final though as it still looks quite awkward when seen from other corners of my room. And also since the new monitor is facing my bed, only one person can view it properly at any given time… from my bed… or my seat. I’ll rearrange things when I have enough new surfaces.

MY cousin reminded me about the Samsung warranty card thing and I found out that mine was missing from the box (most probably removed prior to purchase as I see a cut mark on the bag where the card was supposed to be. I never used a blade to open the box btw) >__> I called the shop from where I bought it from and they were being the prick that all shops are when problem arises and refused to take responsibility for the matter. I decided to take this matter to Samsung directly and tried calling them up through their customer service but I was greeted by an answering machine stating that they are closed for the holiday. I’ll be trying again tomorrow…

HDMI hunting day

March 8, 2009

It’s the second and last day with my mother away and we also didn’t do much chore aside from washing the clothes and putting those joss stick thingies where they should go when we felt like it.

Also, I spent most of today looking for some HDMI!

Though I said that, I only really went to one place and I didn’t even get home with a HDMI.

Anyway, there was a new dilemma as of yesterday after I tried plugging the adaptor onto my monitor: There was very… VERY little space left for a HDMI in the little gap left behind my monitor >__> So a new criteria added to the list is a HDMI with a small head… very small head. Which most of them aren’t cheap.

By the end of the day, after many thinking and stuff, I have decided to just get a DVI to HDMI cable thing instead, although I have been very much against getting those as I find it very impractical on the long run. Oh well…

Samsung 2233SW

March 4, 2009

While the title of this post may suggest a review post, this isn’t really one.

And yes, I got my hands on one right after coming back from my Japanese class earlier.

I got it off for Rm590 at a shop that usually sells it for Rm630, pretty ok deal I’d say. They do sell it for RM565 down at LowYat but the cost of travelling there would have more or less cover the difference.

Took me awhile to set it up for my computer as I haven’t touched my graphics card display control panel for quite a little over a year or two now. That and I was getting confused because the computer detects both my current monitor and the new monitor as having the same name; might be some driver mishap but I guess I’ll leave them be until something fatal shows up.

I just got it and my neck hurts already...

I just got it and my neck hurts already...

Also, I couldn’t think of a better way to place the new monitor so I placed it on the shelf thing where the scanner used to be above the CRT monitor to create a vertical spanning desktop. Only problem here is that the shelf is waaaay high up and now my new monitor is in the heavens. Not to mention I can’t see it in its glorious colours as I would be out of its viewing angle when I am seated. For now, I’m thinking about either plundering a monitor wall mount from some rich people or tying the monitor in to angle with some wires. Which ever I feel like doing first~

I’ve tried Audiosurf and Inochi Mijikashite Tatakae! Otome on the monitor; looks good… =ω=

Then I spent most of the rest of the time after that like the rest of today: doing some paying work. Yes, you read that right.

EDIT: and… the monitor does works with the PS3, yay~

Something I’ve been thinking…

March 1, 2009

Yes, another matter that had been at the top of a my mind for god-knows how long but was never mentioned here before because I forget about it when it comes to the time when I make an entry at the end of the day.

Anyway, it has been long since I started dreaming about a HD TV (since I got a PS3 to be exact, before that I couldn’t care less about what crap TV I had). It is also known by me that it is extremely impractical for me, aside from playing my PS3 that is but that’s all there is to it. So paying a price that could get me two motorcycles JUST to play a game console isn’t what I’d call a smart purchase. Why am I saying that I’ll only be playing my PS3 on it you ask? Well then, all the TV stations in this country are still sending transmission at 4:3 aspect ration! HDTVs are 16:9. This means the pictures would be stretched horizontally. If I’m paying 2 motorcycles for it, I’d expect the circles shown on it to appear round, not oval.
